Our NIH R01 Grant application entitled, "New mechanisms for increasing skeletal muscle endurance scored 1st percentile and will start January 1st, 2025.
In this grant we will determine the mechanisms and roles for stretch activation (SA), a poorly understood muscle and heart mechanical property, in different muscle fiber types. We hypothesize that SA contributes to the higher level of endurance exhibited by some skeletal muscles, and that the mechanism behind SA in skeletal muscle involves a reversable myosin power stroke. They also propose that altered SA in heart muscle is a mechanism behind hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a leading cause of death in young adults.
This is a 5-year grant that will be funded for a total of $2,710,948 by NIAMS.
